When You Need a Data Plan
Why your camera needs a data plan in 4G mode
When NEXA Prime 4K connects through 4G LTE, it uses the cellular network to send alerts, support Live View, and upload event clips to the cloud. That requires an active data plan on the embedded eSIM.
If you're using Wi-Fi mode at a location with local network coverage, you do not need a cellular data plan for connectivity. Cloud storage is a separate service.
Choosing the Right Amount
How much data does a security camera actually use?
Data consumption depends on four main variables:
- Event frequency: How often does something trigger a recording at your location?
- Recording clip length: Longer clips per event means more data per event.
- Live View usage: Opening Live View uses data in 4G mode.
- Video quality settings: Higher resolution and bitrate means larger files per event.
NEXA Prime 4K uses H.265 video compression and does not stream continuous video to the cloud. For a low-to-moderate activity location with occasional Live View, the smaller monthly plans are usually sufficient.

Common questions
Do I need a data plan if I use Wi-Fi mode?
No. If the camera connects through your home or business Wi-Fi, a cellular data plan is not required for connectivity. You may still want a separate cloud storage plan.
What happens if I run out of data mid-month?
The camera continues to operate locally — recording to the TF card and running AI detection. Cloud upload and remote Live View via cellular will be limited until you add more data or your plan renews.
Can I switch between 4G and Wi-Fi after setup?
Yes. The connection mode can be changed in the AOVIS app.
